A Chance to Take Our Community Back

The up-and-coming Section 1 run-off election in Point Aquarius is a very important step in re-gaining control of our community for the benefit of all residents. The democratic process is at stake, and we need to be sure everyone is informed about important issues. Several good people have unanimously unseated two incumbents who were on the Board while undesirable actions were taken to steal away the rights of all residents. There is one more incumbent that needs to be overturned to allow the new crop of Directors to restore the rights of residents and return the voice of the property owners to the community. To put all of us back in control of our own money, we need Becky Buckner as the Section1 representative.

This page could be filled with egregious examples of how the former Board set out to take complete control of Point Aquarius. Dictators rule by absolute authority. Unfortunately, our community is being ruled by a group of misguided individuals who prescribe their authority on all of us. The By-laws have been changed to take away our rights to question anything. After hundreds of our neighbors signed a petition objecting to the 40% increase in annual fees, the Association attorney explained that we have no rights to object to these high assessments. We cannot even question any decision about how our money is being spent. Another good example of their power grab is the clubhouse resolution. The Board has written it to insure that there is absolutely no feedback from the community in any part of the plan for the new building.

We still live in the United States of America even though it doesn’t feel like it in Point Aquarius. One of the few rights we do have left as residents is voting. We can bring in new leadership to change the direction to a people-oriented community. Once we get new leaders on the board, they can appoint a By-laws Committee to recommend changes to the By-laws. These recommendations can then be presented to the property owners for their approval, thereby giving us our rights back. Residents should never be shut out of the decision making. After all, it is our money!

What’s wrong with asking the residents if they really want a new clubhouse? If they do, how much do they want to spend on the project? Do they want to go into debt to build it? Freedom-loving Americans would expect to be able to voice their opinion about how their own money is being spent, but that is not the case here in Point Aquarius under present leadership. Six people on the board want to dictate their ideas to everyone else. Vote for Becky Buckner to give the voice back to the property owners where it belongs.

A hallmark of sound leadership is honesty and openness. People are insulted by cover-ups. They want to know what is going on in the community in order to call it “their community”. The present Board has a penchant for secrecy which only breeds contempt. They don’t want residents to know what they are doing, so they communicate sparingly with very few details. In 2003, $70,000 of our money was embezzled and the leadership on the board steadfastly refused to give us any information about it. For nine months Leslie Holbert was systematically stealing our money and none of the board members noticed it. Is that what they call oversight? Who’s minding the store? What else have they overlooked? The time for a change is overdue!

There are now four responsible people on the Board who are poised to make changes to get our community back on the right track. One more is needed to complete the overhaul. Section 1 residents who believe in democracy and want to make Point Aquarius a better place to live should come out in force to support Becky Buckner.

"Who's minding the store?" is right. Just what is going on since the Monday 6/12 meeting? We can't go to these meetings so depend on the marquee for updates. This blog seems to be on top of things, so please fill us in. Thanks!
